
In 2023, Ohio Republicans scrambled to block citizen initiatives to enshrine abortion access in Ohio’s constitution. Establishing a special election in August, 2023 solely for Issue 1, Republicans sought to make it effectively impossible to change the state’s constitution. After a citizen initiative got the necessary signatures to get abortion on the ballot, Republicans did their best to block it. Ohio ultimately defeated right-wing attempts, enshrining abortion in the state’s constitution. We covered the struggle as it unfolded.
